Boncz stays committed to Bobcat football

Despite graduating last year, Matthew Boncz is committed to the North Port High School Bobcat football team — and the score is the last thing on his mind.

The football program at North Port has faced many challenges over the years, with different coaching staffs and players switching schools. But this year, the team is focused on improving, increasing Bobcat pride, and keeping each other encouraged on and off the field.

“We’ve never really had a good record for NPHS football, but I’m a real strong believer,” Boncz said. “No matter how many times people keep looking down on us, or even when my teammates didn’t believe much, I sure always did. There is a future for North Port football.”

Boncz played for North Port beginning his sophomore year as a lineman. He ended up as a varsity wide receiver his senior year.

Boncz says that while he was playing, he focused on the game, and not the score.

“I don’t believe in the scoreboard because to me there is no such thing — focus on you and the team.”

The NPHS alumnus is learning to become a future Bobcat football coach. Currently, Boncz helps keep the players and coaches focused on maintaining a positive attitude throughout the game. He also assists with preparing the field and being a mentor for the other players.

According to Boncz, the team has improved this season and admits that it is taking small steps forward in every area. Just like many of the former Bobcat players, Boncz had to face coaching changes in the program and teammates leaving for other schools. But every challenge was a chance to take the necessary steps to overcome it.

Boncz may not be playing on the field, but his role on the sidelines is just as important.

“You have to learn that it’s going to take time to better yourself, for the sake of improving your team,” Boncz said. “To me, it’s kind of like a marriage. Whatever you go through, you do it together; you and everyone else has to work together. You have to go through the hard stuff in order to get the best stuff. Inspire yourself to inspire others to keep believing.”
